Staying home on a Saturday night isn’t always the most exciting option. Yet over the last 43 years, Saturday Night Live has gotten us to stay in during prime drinking and socializing time throughout the fall, winter, and spring, year after year. It’s kind of miraculous when you think about the staying power of a sketch comedy show through the generations.
Now, SNL is giving us another reason to stay in on Saturday nights: Wine. SNL just launched a line of wine to tempt you to stay in next Saturday to watch SNL with a bottle of red or white. Their collaboration with Lot 18 released four bottles that’ll set you back $18-$20 a pop. The Merlot, Chardonnay, Beaujolais, and red blend all have specialty labels commemorating three iconic sketch characters and the show.
According to Lot 18’s tasting notes, ‘Stefon Beaujolais’ has “enticing aromas of blue fruit and candied violet are followed by red plum, red cherry, and light blueberry flavors plus a hint of black pepper on the palate.” We sorta thought that this one would smell and taste more like the bar at Slice or Taste but candied violets are okay too. We guess.
The vapid and impossibly blond Californians get the next red wine in the flight. ‘The Californians Monterey County Merlot’ is described as “concentrated black cherry, red plum, roasted coffee bean is exhibited in this red of excellent length, concentration, and structure.”
Kinda feels like this one should have been a white wine to match all that tan, beige, and blond in the sketch. But maybe that’s just us.
‘Debbie Downer South Eastern Australian Chardonnay’ is the only white wine and commemorates everyone’s favorite reminder of terrible disease and calamity played expertly by Rachel Dratch. The wine’s described as “a charming white from Down Under with a flavor profile that’s bursting with delightful citrus, baked apple, and spice.” That’s all well and good but we’re starting to feel like they really missed the boat on using the characters to sell these wines. We’re sure Debbie would have reminded us of all the deadly snakes, monstrous spiders, and killer crocs “Down Under”, instead of worrying about what the wine tastes like.
Lastly, there’s the ‘Saturday Night Live California Red Blend.’ This is the wine to get you through all those long wintry Saturday nights ahead while you’re home waiting for SNL to come on. The flavor profile is “bold and dense. This wine shows black cherry, black plum, vanilla, dried herbs, oak flavors on the palate, and firm, chewy tannins on the warm finish.”
Which, admittedly, sounds like a tasty winter wine to sip while you bask in SNL’s warming glow.
