President Trump is so frustrated over delays on his mythical U.S.-Mexico border wall that he’s reportedly asked the military to donate part of their budget to the cause. His singular-minded focus continued through the holiday weekend with him greeting Easter morning through tweets complaining about “our dumb immigration laws.” He once again ranted about “big drug and people flows” and threatened to dismantle NAFTA. Trump also exclaimed, “NEED WALL!”

The president then complained about “Caravans” of people swarming over the U.S.-Mexico border. He also urged the GOP to go nuclear and conclude the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program once and for all, despite the Supreme Court’s recent refusal to quickly address the fate of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

Before this pair of tweets, Trump did say, “Happy Easter!”

He then returned to slamming the DACA program.

Trump’s had an active weekend on social media. On Saturday, he continued to bash Amazon, which he recently attacked for not paying enough taxes, over postal fees. This isn’t the first time Trump has done so, but here, he claims (without citing evidence) that Amazon is causing the U.S. Postal Service to lose money. In response, CBS News has already performed a fact check to disprove these claims.

Google

If you’re looking for a fun April Fool’s Day prank that isn’t actually a prank and isn’t out to ruin your day, Google has delivered a version of Where’s Waldo using Google Maps. It’s one of those April Fool’s gags that doesn’t try take over the app, but merely offers a side step away from anything productive you might need. It also works on mobile or desktop, so feel free to waste that time at work since it will be available all week.

The game is simple but also provides you with more than just Waldo to find at different locales around the globe. His pals Wenda, Woof, Wizard Whitebeard are also along for whatever form of transportation Waldo takes, with the bad guy Odlaw in pursuit to do…something? Not sure why Waldo needs a bad version, especially when the world already has Waluigi right over at Nintendo able to fill the role for everybody. Just add Waluigi to everything and we’ll be just fine.

You can also get a small treat by asking Google “where’s Waldo” on your smartphone or home assistant. It just speaks to you about checking out Maps, but it is still a cheap little addition to something that’s pretty harmless. You can also gain badges by finding all of the characters, which is apparently a thing you can do in Google Maps and show off to your friends. It might seem worthless, but we suddenly want to collect every badge possible.

The game will be available for the rest of the week, so don’t feel like you have to leave your family behind if you enjoy that Easter company.

In July 2017, John Oliver enlightened his viewers about a far-right media empire, Sinclair Broadcasting, which was not yet a household name but was in the process of expanding its local news holdings to over 230 stations nationwide. Last week, Deadspin began rounding up clips of these stations’ anchors reciting a script that sounded like it was inspired by a Trump tirade about “fake news.” The script, which you can read at ThinkProgress, included the following lines:

“We’re concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one sided news stories plaguing our country. The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media … More alarming, some media outlets publish these same fake stories… stories that just aren’t true, without checking facts first. … Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control ‘exactly what people think’ … This is extremely dangerous to a democracy.”

The robotic-sounding clips played like state-media propaganda that one would expect in North Korea or Russia. So of course, the videos made the internet rounds all weekend, and Jimmy Kimmel, who’s spent the past year becoming an influential voice on multiple hot-button political issues (and reaping results), slammed Sinclair’s heavy-handed tactics as “extremely dangerous to our democracy” (echoing Sinclair’s words) while tweeting a compilation link.

Indeed, given that Trump actually announced “fake news awards,” Sinclair’s targets couldn’t be clearer. In addition, Trump has tweeted old wrestling footage of himself physically attacking CNN. He then spent last Christmas Even sharing memes of him “killing” CNN, and not long after that, a Michigan man was arrested for threatening to kill CNN employees for being “fake news.” Not only could Sinclair’s actions endanger democracy, but they could potentially incite further violence.

You can watch the bizarre montage of Sinclair-owned stations’ anchors reciting the speech below, courtesy of Deadspin.

ready_player_box_office.jpg

Warner Bros.

Seventy-one-year-old Steven Spielberg returned this weekend with his first true action-adventure pic since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the box-office receipts rewarded him. Spielberg’s Ready Player One put up a solid $40 million over the three-day weekend and $52 million since it premiered on Thursday. Not only is the three-day $40 million opening Spielberg’s best since Crystal Skull, it’s the fifth best opening of his career, behind two Jurassic Park movies, Crystal Skull and 2005’s War of the Worlds. Granted, $52 million is not lights-out for a movie that cost $175 million to make, but Spielberg action movies have historically played even better overseas, so it is like that Ready Player One will eventually see the black side of the ledger. In fact, through the first two days, Ready Player One earned more in China alone — and in the rest of the overseas markets — than it has in America. It’s poised to be a successful global hit.

Spielberg’s latest has been buoyed by solid reviews (76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and it received a leg up in the word-of-mouth department after debuting at SXSW in early March (I can attest to the raucous crowd, which maintained their enthusiasm even after the projector temporarily broke during the film’s climactic scene). It’s also benefiting hugely from an audience comprised of nearly 40 percent men over the age of 25, for whom most of the film’s pop-culture references are directed. Nearly half of viewers are also turning out because they were readers of the popular Ernest Cline novel upon which the movie is based.

In either respect, it illustrates that Spielberg has still got it when it comes to action films, which bodes well as he ramps up for the next installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, which will pair him again with 75-year-old Harrison Ford.

Meanwhile, the Tyler Perry brand is still going strong. Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, starring Taraji P. Henson, started well with a $16.9 million tally, which is about even with its expected budget in the mid-teens. The opening is off a bit from most Tyler Perry openings, but it’s better than the $9.9 million Henson’s Proud Mary opened with earlier this year.

The rest of the weekend’s top ten were all holdovers. Black Panther is not going away quietly. Now in its 7th week of release, it’s earned $650 million after adding another $11.5 million. It’s the fifth biggest movie of all time, and with another $10 million, it will jump into third place all-time, domestic.

Meanwhile, the faith-based I Can Only Imagine has quietly taken the title of sleeper hit of the year, so far. The film, made for only $7 million, earned another $10.7 million this weekend to bring its overall total to $55.7 million. Before all is said and done, I Can Only Imagine is poised to be the biggest faith-based hit since 2014’s Heaven is for Real. It’s also the highest grossing film ever for Roadside Attractions, surpassing the $47 million earned by Manchester by the Sea.

I Can Only Imagine’s success may have come at the expense of two other faith-based flicks. Paul, Apostle Of Christ could only muster $3.7 million on Easter Weekend to bring its overall total to $11 million after two weeks. Meanwhile, another new release this weekend, God’s Not Dead 3, finished outside the top ten with only $3 million.

Pacific Rim: Uprising took a 66 percent tumble in its second weekend. With $9.5 million, it now sits at $46 million after two weeks. Not to worry, though; it’s already earned $122 million overseas before this weekend’s receipts have come in. Tomb Raider, in at number 7 this weekend, has also greatly benefited from the overseas box office. While it’s only managed $51 million after 3 weeks stateside, it has earned another $169 million overseas, meaning that around 80 percent of its gross comes from international markets.

Sherlock Gnomes took sixth place this weekend, hanging on decently now that Peter Rabbit has fallen outside of the top 10. The animated flick has now earned $23 million on a $59 million budget. It’s still rolling out worldwide.

The splendid Love, Simon quietly continues to perform well. With another $5.2 million, it’s earned $32 million after three weeks, nearly double its $17 million budget. Finally, with $5 million, A Wrinkle In Time has now earned $83 million. Overseas, it’s not performing particularly well, either, underperforming in both France and England, so far.

Next week sees the release of four new films. Blockers — the John Cena butt-chugging film and one of the funniest studio films I’ve seen in years — will be competing against John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place, one of the best horror thrillers I have seen in a long time. They will be taking on two films opening in half the number of theaters, Chappaquiddick and another faith-based film, The Miracle Season.

Hundreds of protesters marched in Sacramento streets on Saturday night following the release of an independent autopsy into the police shooting of an unarmed black man, Stephon Clark. The autopsy confirmed he’d been shot eight times (mostly in the back) in his grandmother’s backyard, with the officers reportedly perceiving Clark’s cell phone as a gun. Saturday night’s march also grew violent when one activist, Wanda Cleveland, was struck by a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department vehicle, which then drove away from the scene.

The local ABC affiliate tweeted a warning-heavy clip showing the moment of impact — one slow-moving sheriff’s vehicle can be heard blaring warnings for protesters to step away, and a second, faster department vehicle approaches from behind and strikes Cleveland. ABC 10 also published a 40-minute video that shows the entire incident, including the moments where Cleveland is laying on the side of the road before being aided by fire department responders.

The Sacramento Bee reveals that the collision was also recorded by a witness named Guy Danilowitz. Cleveland, who was released from a nearby hospital, described the incident as a “hit and run”:

The activist struck was Wanda Cleveland, a regular at Sacramento City Council meetings. She lay immobile on her side in the street until a fire department crew arrived to pick her up.

Cleveland was released from Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center after midnight, with bruises on her arm and the back of her head. “He never even stopped. It was a hit and run. If I did that I’d be charged,” Cleveland said at the hospital. “It’s disregard for human life.”

The Sacramento Bee reports that Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt Shaun Hampton officially confirmed on Sunday morning that the collision happened. Hampton characterized the crowd of protesters as including “vandals” who kicked department vehicles, including “scratches, dents, and a shattered rear window.” Hampton did not explain why the second sheriff’s vehicle was traveling faster and why it didn’t stop after impact.

The New York Times notes that the officers who were driving both vehicles have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

ABC

Much has been made about the return of Roseanne and her status as a Trump supporter — both in the show and in real life. The rating success of the show and the opening episode’s commentary on the current political climate got many people talking and crowning the president as one of the reasons the show returned to such large numbers. This is likely not the truth and according to Sara Gilbert, the rest of the season will put it to the test because Trump will not return to the plot.

In fact, Gilbert says that the president’s name never actually makes an appearance in the show during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live:

“The Conners aren’t Trump supporters. Roseanne’s character is a Trump supporter — she’s the only one — and we never say his name, actually, in the show…

“The show is not about politics. It’s not about anyone’s position or a policy, it’s really about what happens to a family when there’s a political divide, which is something that I think the entire country can relate to and something we need to talk about. So, with our show, it’s never about ‘doing an issue’ or ‘doing politics,’ it’s: How do these things affect a family unit?”

All of this really makes sense and as many have pointed out, the success of the show is more likely the result of a classic sitcom making a highly publicized return. If you look around on television, there is probably an episode of Roseanne on right now and the revival has been in people’s minds for an entire year leading up to its premiere. Compare it to the success of Fuller House on Netflix. It is not the Trump show, despite what many of the headlines and reports would have you thinking of this past week.

The Hollywood Reporter also says that Gilbert had told them that the show doesn’t focus on politics past the first episode, with Whitney Cummings adding the following:

“We keep saying that the first episode is going to piss off liberals and the other eight are going to piss off conservatives.”

It would seem that she was definitely correct about the first episode, so we’ll just have to pay attention to see if she’s right about the rest.

Chronicle Books

Last Night Tonight‘s skewering of a Pence family book for tots has already dwarfed Veep-associated offering in terms of sales and now the same-sex friendly version of bunny Marlon Bundo’s adventures is set to be donated en masse in the Hoosier State.

A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, a kids book written by Jill Twiss and illustrated by EG Keller, emerged in response to Marlon Bundo’s: A Day in the Life of the Vice President written by Vice President of the United States Mike Pence’s daughter Charlotte and illustrated by Second Lady Karen Pence. The John Oliver endorsed psuedo-parody takes aim at Pence’s anti-LGBTQ2 viewpoint by taking the real life Pence family pet and placing him in a pro-LGBT and marriage equality tale. Will & Grace showrunner Max Mutchnick was so taken by the book that on Friday he announced plans to distribute the book to public school’s in Indiana, the home state of the Pences.

Mutchnick shared his plan on Instagram along with a letter sent to Turkey Run Elementary School explaining the reason for the donation.

“I was blown away by the new John Oliver children’s book, “A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo.” With Easter upon us, I wanted to not only support the brilliance of John Oliver, but also celebrate the Gayest Bunny of Them All: The Easter Bunny. So I decided to buy a copy of Oliver’s “Bundo” (written by Jill Twiss) for every public grammar school in Indiana. All 1,121 of them,” shared Mutchnick.

“Here’s why: Mike Pence has had an enormous platform in Indiana, and as it relates to gay people, he’s used it to spread a message of intolerance. By donating these books, I hope to counter those efforts and provide positive role models and a story of inclusion for children in Pence’s home state. If this book can help one boy or girl in Indiana love and accept who they are, I know both Marlon Bundos would be proud—even though one of them is on the downlow.”

You could certainly do worse for an Easter or Passover gift. If you attend one the 1,121 designated Indiana schools, kudos on your library’s new acquisition.
