I always thought things that sounded too good to be true usually aren't told why discovered this!

Marvel

Like other recent Marvel movies, Avengers: Infinity War will likely dominate the box office for weeks to come after crushing multiple records — including the opening weekend record ($257.70 million) previously set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.96 million) in December 2015. One might imagine that the news arrived as a blow to a few egos in a galaxy far, far away, but that isn’t the case. At least, not outwardly, and in the game of healthy competition, Lucasfilm has now duly passed the baton to Marvel.

That is, Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber has been passed to Iron Man’s gauntlet. In doing so, the Star Wars Twitter account, on behalf of Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, extended a congratulatory tweet to the Avengers for Hulk-busting the opening weekend record.

While this new opening weekend record will be broken anytime soon — indeed, it might be a full year before that happens by the hands of the next Avengers movie — Lucasfilm also has plenty of coin to look forward to in the near future with the May 25 release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which should fare exceedingly well, regardless of landing in theaters a mere week after 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool 2. Yet the real winners here are fans, who remain emotionally invested enough to keep watching these franchises until the end.

Solo: A Star Wars Story recently wrapped production and dropped a reassuringly entertaining full-length trailer, which we broke down here. On Sunday, director Ron Howard took to Twitter to remind us who everybody’s probably going to be talking about in what might end up being a trilogy: Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian.

Lando was also a standout during a screening of Solo: A Star Wars Story footage at CinemaCon last month. Variety praised the footage (a scene of Han and Lando gambling) and Birth Movies Death also noted Lando’s stand-out performance.

There was also huge fan response to this recent poster of the whole cast:

People inevitably honed in on one character in particular:

At least one person made a compelling case that Lucasfilm knew exactly what they were doing.

Some people — like Quelynace and the appropriately-named LandoSWAG77 — thought the poster could be even better, though:

Better movie?

Lando Calrissian stealing focus in a Star Wars poster is a long-standing tradition, it turns out:

And those capes! A new Star Wars tie-in novel, Last Shot, recently revealed he has an entire cape closet, and it’s been spotted in footage from the movie, too:

Commentary about his flair for fashion and overall je ne sais qua continued.

Lando: A Star Wars Story opens May 25th.

Seth Meyers was quick to come to the defense of Michelle Wolf on Monday’s episode of Late Night. Not only did he call out the WHCD for knowing what they were getting into before hiring Wolf to appear, he disagreed with their assertion that “the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit” of a unifying message, free press, and the first amendment. “Sarah Huckabee Sanders got off easy,” according to Meyers and Wolf’s first amendment rights were clearly on display.

It also gave Meyers another reason to target Donald Trump, pointing out the president’s tweet about the event and the mention of the infamous dinner that Meyers hosted and allegedly sent us down this timeline:

“Now, Michelle Wolf doesn’t need anyone to defend her. But she is our friend. So just know, when you call her filthy, you are right. She is filthy. And she is mean, which is what we love about her. Because those are wonderful qualities for comedians and terrible qualities for world leaders.”

There has been no shortage of defense for Wolf on Twitter, with many comedians getting vocal with journalists and critics of the event by pointing out their odd defense of an administration that has demonized them since taking office.

Meyers adding his voice to that group is no surprise given his past history with Wolf and it is nice to see him go to bat for her and promote her work. Her Netflix show is either poised to be very popular or the next big controversy that people will boycott. Either way, as Meyers said, you can’t hurt her image. They’re not wrong to say she’s filthy and she’s likely proud of it.

Ashley Judd has taken steps to sue Harvey Weinstein over his past actions that she claims “damaged” her career in Hollywood. Judd was one of the major sources in the initial report that led to the fall of the Hollywood mogul and the details that have filtered out since that moment has shined a light on decades of mistreatment and actions against several actresses.

Judd shared a link to the lawsuit on Twitter, with her apparent “blacklisting” during the production of Lord Of The Rings standing as a focal point in the case according to Deadline:

The suit says that, in retaliation for Judd rebuffing Weinstein, he “torpedoed Ms. Judd’s incredible professional opportunity” when he told Jackson and Walsh “that [his] studio had had a ‘bad experience’ with Ms. Judd, and that Ms. Judd was a ‘nightmare’ to work with and should be avoided ‘at all costs.’ “

“With those baseless smears, Weinstein succeeded in blacklisting Ms. Judd and destroying her ability to work on what became a multibillion-dollar franchise with 17 Academy Award wins and
many more nominations,”

Judd will be donating any money recovered in the suit to charity and hopes that this will be a moment where Weinstein is held accountable for his “conduct and for the ways in which he’s damaged careers,” with Deadline pointing out that as many as 100 women have come forward against the disgraced mogul.

The suit highlights Judd’s encounter with Weinstein and the real reason she feels he spoke out against her and actress Mira Sorvino to director Peter Jackson:

“The pathetic reality, however, was that Weinstein was retaliating against Ms. Judd for rejecting his sexual demands approximately one year earlier, when he cornered her in a hotel room under the guise of discussing business. A self-described ‘benevolent dictator’ who has bragged that ‘I can be scary,’ Weinstein used his power in the entertainment industry to damage Ms. Judd’s reputation and limit her ability to find work.”

Judd’s case joins several lawsuits against the former head of The Weinstein Company, with the first coming shortly after the initial story in October 2017.

**Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War below**

Avengers: Infinity War is out. Just about everyone has seen it, which has helped boost the movie to the biggest opening weekend globally and domestically of all time. And while much has been made about the stakes being somewhat diluted thanks to the announced forthcoming movies from characters who are now floating ash, there were other swerves that kept viewers on their toes. Slights of hand via marketing, and trailers that were simply red herrings.

We have an entire, lengthy article detailing the changes and misdirections Marvel made with their collection of trailers, and in retrospect their decision to fake out the audience makes sense. No one wants to see the movie in the trailers. That’s the worst. The directors of Infinity War know it, too. So Joe and Anthony Russo set out to not only push the story forward but do their best to deliver fresh scenes to the audience that haven’t been rewatched and dissected into oblivion. They explained their motivation to Variety, who states: “misdirection was employed in the marketing of the film to keep the brand’s very loyal and savvy audience from sniffing out what he and his brother were up to.”

“If you look at every film we’ve done for Marvel, there are huge, game-changing events at the end of the movies. We are interested in pushing the boundaries and pushing the story forward in unexpected ways, surprising the audience as much as we can.

We do our best work when we follow our instincts and tell the story we want to tell. We’ve had one or two experiences early in our careers where we didn’t do that and we learned a very hard lesson: When you try to predict what an audience wants, you’re going to make mush. When you commit to the story you want to tell, it tends to have a much more resonant impact on the audience … The audience can tell you they love chocolate ice cream, but if you give it to them every day, they’re going to get sick of it real fast. You’ve got to stay ahead of them.”

And the audience loves Spider-Man and Black Panther, which is why it’s best to turn them into freeze-dried chocolate ice cream and scatter them into the wind. At least for now.
