As Donald Trump has inserted himself into the sports world, plenty of players have pushed back against the president’s efforts to critique or demean them via social media. We’ve seen players in the NFL and NBA fire back at Trump over his anti-protest stance and his efforts to control the narrative when the Warriors, and Steph Curry in particular, made it clear they had no interest in visiting The White House as NBA champs.

In the latter case, LeBron James came to the defense of Curry and went after Trump on Twitter, calling him a “bum” and explaining that you can’t revoke someone’s invite after they’ve already declined. This isn’t the first time James has criticized Trump, but it apparently created more outrage than it had in the past.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, whose company Quicken Loans supported Trump’s inauguration although he himself offered donations to Hillary Clinton and Chris Christie’s campaigns, found himself receiving voicemails and messages in response to LeBron’s tweet and found the content of those messages stunning.

As Gilbert told Squawk Box on CNBC (via ESPN), he received tons of messages that shocked him by the level of racism that still exists in 2017.

“I received voicemails after LeBron tweeted that were some of the most vile, disgusting, racist [messages],” Gilbert said Friday. “There’s an element of racism that I didn’t even realize existed in this country this much.

“The thing is, I mean, some of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard people say,” Gilbert said. “And you could hear it in their voice — the racism. It wasn’t even really about the issue, and that’s what really got me, because they went to who they really are, some of them.”

It speaks to how insulated so many are to the divide over race, when the events in Charlottesville and elsewhere over the past year have not alerted them to the fact that racism is still a significant problem in this country. Gilbert needed to receive the messages personally to have his eyes opened to those issues, much like those around the NFL needed Trump to attack their players for them to react and realize the problem with his rhetoric over the past year.

The ability of those people to turn away from obvious problems because “they don’t affect me” is the epitome of privilege, and it takes a direct confrontation with those issues to prove their existence. If nothing else, this year has brought to light a lot of those problems and issues that were formerly lingering just under the surface for so many, making them easy to ignore. Now they’re out in the open and people have to confront them on a more regular basis, which has been the goal of all the protests so many have reviled. The question is whether Gilbert will learn from this or, as so many have, consider it a unique occurrence, failing to put the pieces together and see the severity and widespread nature of racism. Hopefully, it’s the former.

Between the recent flybys performed by American bombers over its waters, claims of nonexistent declarations of war, and China’s looming ecominic blockade, North Korea is in a tight spot when it comes to international relations. Then again, its leader’s frequent back-and-forth with President Donald Trump — who isn’t the most stable guy in his own right — haven’t made things any better for the small dictatorship. According to State Secretary Rex Tillerson, however, not all is completely lost when it comes to potentially improving diplomatic relations with Pyongyang.

Following a meeting with President Xi Jinping and other top Chinese officials on Saturday, Tillerson spoke with reporters at the U.S. ambassador’s residence. “We are probing, so stay tuned,” he said of attempts to open a dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “We ask, ‘Would you like to talk?’ We have lines of communications to Pyongyang — we’re not in a dark situation, a blackout. We have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang.” Tillerson wouldn’t provide too much detail, including whether or not North Korea was responding to U.S. requests to speak. Though he did reveal the lines of communications were direct:

“We can talk to them,” Mr. Tillerson said. “We do talk to them.” When asked whether those channels ran through China, he shook his head. “Directly,” he said. “We have our own channels.”

Considering the intense relations between the U.S. and North Korea, Tillerson insisted the best current course of action is to simmer down. “The whole situation is a bit overheated right now,” he said. “If North Korea would stop firing its missiles, that would calm things down a lot.” Even so, the secretary warned the White House’s approach to Pyongyang would be nothing like its stance on Iran, with whom the Obama administration secured a hotly contested nuclear deal. “We are not going to put together a nuclear deal in North Korea that is as flimsy as the one in Iran,” he said.

Following a Friday rife with public pleas for help and criticisms of the Trump administration’s lackluster response by San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, Donald Trump spent Saturday morning responding with a string of nasty tweets about Puerto Rico. “The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” he wrote. “Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort”:

After his initial attack on Cruz and, apparently, pretty much anyone in the Puerto Rican government and local community, he segued into several tweets and retweets praising or highlighting the “10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.” “The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones,” Trump continued, “have done an amazing job. Puerto Rico was totally destroyed.”

Before calling it a morning and presumably heading out to shoot a few rounds of golf at his private club in Bedminster, New Jersey, the president dedicated a few final tweets to his favorite target: fake news. “Fake News CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders,” he wrote. Trump also managed to squeeze in yet another reminder of his planned trip to Puerto Rico on Tuesday:

To her credit, Cruz chose not to respond directly to the president’s tweeted criticisms. In fact, she didn’t even mention him or his office when she accompanied several photos with the line: “The goal is one: saving lives. This is the time to show our ‘true colors’. We cannot be distracted by anything else”:

CBS News reporter David Begnaud, who’s been on the ground in Puerto Rico covering the devastation and the response, posted a short video responding to Trump’s tweets with his own experiences. “The community has been doing as much as they can do,” he said. “People were running out of food and running out of water, so neighbors were sharing rice and the water that they did have left”:

Meanwhile, the majority of those who responded to Trump’s tweeted attacks were unsurprisingly forthright. Especially Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose extended family hails from Puerto Rico. Though he initially praised the president for finally waiving the Jones Act so that aid could flow freely into port, his opinion Saturday morning was decidedly different:

Others quickly followed with similar reactions:

UPDATE: Mayor Cruz appeared on MSNBC Saturday morning, at which point host Joy Reid asked her about Trump’s tweets. She clarified that none of her previous comments and complaints ever mentioned the president directly. She also noted that Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, who was appointed to head rescue and relief efforts, had previously made similar remarks. “This isn’t about me. This isn’t about anyone. This is about lives that are being lost,” she said.

nobody knows I'm unemployed because I've got so much money

Just like how Harley Quinn costumes were the hottest thing this side of Jack-O’-Lanterns last Halloween, It baddie and walking clown nightmare Pennywise is destined to be everywhere. Like EVERYWHERE. (Including your local sewer system.) When something becomes the year’s go-to costume, there’s an understandable amount of reluctance to go with the popular pick. There’s nothing wrong with bristling at going with the default option, but maybe don’t give up on playing Pennywise just yet if that’s what you originally had your heart set on.

Going with a popular costume isn’t bad. In fact, it’s a beautiful thing. “Creative” costumes tend to often be era-specific pulls too and there’s no rule saying you can’t add your own twist and touches if you want an It-inspired costume. Thanks to the brave cosplay warriors out there, we’ve already been able to see how all the little variations in makeup, costumery and presentation can bring out unique touches that can make a gaggle of Pennywises (including the Tim Curry version) seem more distinct than the Party City set.

To accomplish a worthwhile Pennywise look, achieving the chalk white look and strikes of red is key. You can show up in a co-ed Naked Lacrosse tee and sweats, but if your makeup is on point it would do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Touches like novelty contact lenses, prop teeth and appropriate clown coiffure enhance the look and give some welcome detail. There’s room for creativity and (more importantly) it’s not that difficult to track down or DIY a lot of these small but significant factors. Once you get across that you’re Pennywise with your makeup, there’s ample room for your own personal expression and interesting adjustments.

It wouldn’t hurt if someone in your circle of friends was Georgie or a floating pack of red balloons, but we can see every individual take on the character makes it its own limited edition variation. The inescapability of the Stephen King character is also a godsend for those of us that need visual aids and video tutorials to DIY up a look. Prince De Guzman channels a faithful Pennywise in the video below and it gets the wheels turning on little changes you might make.

You can hone the fundamentals of how to look like Pennywise courtesy of the excellent step-by-step makeup tutorial from Pinkstylist nestled below.

If you can get down with the clown (make-up), put the overall package together with appropriately sinister jester attire. Pennywise’s 2017 look is more old-timey than the 1990 version, requiring a look that’s more inspired by centuries past than a Dollar Tree clown costume. One major perk of the “new” Pennywise look is that the costume’s ol’ timey feel is something where you can get creative on how it’s presented. It’s a ruffled, off-color sort of look (without Krusty the Clown style shoes) and veers closer to American Horror Story‘s Twisty in its neck-down presentation. Think Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian in your approach rather than a standard birthday clown.

As is the case with any wardrobe homage, you don’t need to have the exact measurements of Bill Skarsgård to pull it off either.

Props are fun, although you’ll either have to be 1) committed to lugging ’em around or 2) be totally cool with potentially leaving things behind. Your smiling grease painted mug will be in plenty of pictures so it’s alright to abandon as required.

There’s an endless supply of It inspiration out there to guide you wherever your supernatural clown freak flag flies. Your Halloween look will be richer for it.
