A good conspiracy theory gets the blood running hot. It should be equal measures absurd and just-believable-enough, meaning that you’re at the very least entertained, even if you don’t take it seriously. Then it’s just good fun. Below are some of the best conspiracy documentaries on Netflix currently.

They go from batshit insanity to “yeah-I-can-see-that” levels of lunacy. Unroll the tin foil and enjoy!

A Good American (2015)

This may not be a straight up conspiracy documentary, but the subject matter is the purest fuel for a lot of conspiracies. The film covers the rise of the American surveillance state after the first World Trade Center attack in 1993 and how the NSA put it into overdrive after the September 11th attacks. It’s a chilling look at how deeply and broadly Big Brother is watching.

Curse of the Man Who Sees UFOs (2016)

The man who is cursed in this case is UFO enthusiast Christo Roppolo. This film offers a stark glimpse into one man’s lifelong quest to document alien UFO encounters that happen all around him. He’s a very determined and a little crazy. And that’s what makes this documentary such a fascinating watch.

Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States (2013)

Oliver Stone has settled into a role as agent provocateur of the American film world. He’s become known for his documentaries that take off-kilter looks at world figures like Chavez and Putin. In this series, Stone examines why so much of our history has been largely erased from the national narrative. It’s a conspiracy that’s harrowingly based on real-life events that we should know but rarely do.

Oklahoma City (2017)

PBS went deep with their documentary on the events leading up to and surrounding the Oklahoma City Bombing. The film follows the trail from Waco to Ruby Ridge to OKC as white supremacy in America grew and reached out into the American mainstream. It’s a sobering look at how easily white supremacy can be radicalized into mass violence against civilians with an even heavier weight given today’s political climate.

Unsealed: Conspiracy Files (2012 – 1 season)

This is pretty much exactly as the packaging suggests. Secret cabals secretly running world governments, aliens, lizard people, grassy knolls, triangles in Bermuda and all that jazz. It’s a docu-series that takes itself very seriously and therefore is really easy to enjoy for a few laughs. Each episode is about 20 minutes long, or the perfect length to reveal the secrets of the real world that’s being hidden just beneath the surface!

The Imposter (2012)

Here’s an example of something that is so strange that you’d think it’s just a batsh*t crazy conspiracy. Yet, it really happened. This film should send chills down your spine at the ability of a random person to take in a whole family while pretending to be their missing child.

Ric Burns

Enquiring Minds (2014)

Gene Pope grew up under the very heavy shadow of his politicking father, Generoso Pope in New York City. Pope wanted to live up to his dad and sell as many newspapers as he could, and, so it was the National Enquirer was born. This doc itself isn’t a conspiracy theory, but its subject is one of the greatest propagators of conspiracy theories of all time.

Kings Of Kallstadt (2014)

This German doc goes to a sleeping little town in Germany where Trump (of floppy hair fame) and Heinz (of ketchup fame) both originated. The film is very tongue-in-cheek and light, even if the locals can’t help but wonder if there’s something in Kallstadt’s water to produce two such iconic Americans from people born in the town.

Cowspiracy (2014)

It’s not necessarily a conspiracy that the cattle industry is a very bad thing for the planet. Yet, the film treats the whole industry like one huge conspiracy that goes all the way to the top, man! You can perhaps get some interesting information from a lot of the posturing about secrets and lies, but it’s still a very sensational — and fun to watch — look into the cattle industry from a very skeptical point of view.

Zeitgeist: The Movie (2007)

This film posits that huge governments and corporations are all conspiring by using religion, 9/11, the US Federal Reserve to control every aspect of our sheep-like lives. The dastards! Did you know that your freedom is nothing more than an illusion presented by secret cabals to keep you in a perpetual slavery to big banks and political dynasties? You do now!
